Two time Tony nominee Tony Roberts has died due to complications related to lung cancer. He was 85.
Known to the general public for his collaborations with Woody Allen, Mr. Roberts was a prolific stage actor, appearing in 24 Broadway productions throughout his career.
Making his Broadway debut in 1962's short lived Something About a Soldier, Mr. Roberts' steady nonchalance soon became his calling card, with a long list of carefully confident characters quickly filling his resume. Within six months of Something About a Soldier's sudden closure, he was back on the boards in Take Her, She's Mine, which was followed in quick succession by Never Too Late, Barefoot in the Park, The Last Analysis, Don't Drink the Water, and How Now, Dow Jones.
The late '60s turned Mr. Roberts toward the glare of the public spotlight, after two successive Tony nominations for How Now, Dow Jones and Play It Again, Sam made him one of the few performers to be recognized for exemplary work in both musicals and plays. In the end, Play It Again, Sam soared above the metaphorical Dow Jones Industrial Average, as the relationship he formed with playwright and star Woody Allen would immortalize Mr. Roberts on screen.
With Allen, Mr. Roberts appeared in the screen version of Play It Again, Sam, and in Allen's films Stardust Memories, A Midsummer Night's Sex Comedy, Hannah and Her Sisters, Radio Days, and Annie Hall, where his portrayal of protagonists Alvy Singer's best friend Rob became one of Allen's most recognizable side characters.
Back on Broadway, however, Mr. Roberts maintained a creative identity separate from Allen, appearing in a wide range of varied productions including Promises, Promises, Sugar, Absurd Person Singular, They're Playing Our Song, Murder at the Howard Johnson's, Doubles, Arsenic and Old Lace, Jerome Robbins' Broadway, The Seagull, The Sisters Rosensweig, Victor/Victoria, The Tale of the Allergist's Wife, and Cabaret, where his performance as the romantic fruit seller Herr Schultz received acclaim.
By the turn of the 21st century, Mr. Roberts had shifted into a more reflective mood, returning to a revival of Barefoot in the Park to play Victor, the eccentric-yet-influential neighbor of his original character, Paul. His final two Broadway performances, as Zeus in Xanadu and Oscar Wolfe in The Royal Family, preceded his final public performance in the 2017 screen remake of Dirty Dancing.
Mr. Roberts is survived by his daughter, Nicole Burley. Information on a public memorial is forthcoming.
