Lucille Lortel, dubbed "Queen of Off-Broadway" for her early and continuing efforts to produce and promote new or underappreciated playwrights in Manhattan's smaller-venue professional theatres, died April 4, 1999, at New York Presbyterian Hospital after a brief illness.
