Job Details

DESCRIPTION

Amore Opera is seeking a Tech Director / Scenic Painter and Set builder for our upcoming production of Gounod's Faust. Faust will be set in the early 19th Century, the period around the Napoleonic Wars, with the post-French Revolution Romanticism. We will be performing in the Connelly Theater in the Lower East Side. Performance period is two weeks with move-in date of Sun June 14th and move-out/strike date of June 28th.

Responsibilities will include:
- Construction of all scenic elements, fabricated with lumber, fabric, and painted canvas. (No foam)
- Collaborate with another scenic designer and take on some of the design yourself.
- Paint scenery and supervise other scenic painting volunteers.
- Oversee the load-in and load-out of the theater. (Rigging, hanging curtains, backdrops. Will need to set up pulleys for the main curtain)
- Coordinate with all departments to ensure a smooth tech process.
- Responsible for the purchasing of supplies, materials, and equipment needed for the set construction.

A little about Amore Opera: We are an amateur opera company dedicated to providing staging opportunities to emerging singing talents. We perform works that are out of copyright and prefer to stage them as they were intended during the period they were set. As such, we prefer scenic design with lumber/canvas flats over the stoic, bare Waiting-For-Godot-with-projections set design, and we value storage efficiency and reusability (We expect to reuse elements that you constructed in future productions)

You will construct the main scenic elements in our NJ warehouse, then assemble them in the theater. As such, you will need to be able to travel to Jersey City, NJ, preferably by public transportation.

Requirements:
- Be present in the theater during the day and ideally through rehearsal at night during tech week.
- Have excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Be flexible to fluctuating circumstances.
- Experience with power tools and are capable of the physical labor required by this position.

When applying, please present a link to your scenic design and construction portfolios (if possible, include any in-progress shots)
