Casting "Lady Day at Emerson's Bar & Grill," a play with music about legendary blues singer Billie Holiday. We are casting the role of Billie Holiday.
Space Pirates Theatre Collective presents an immersive staged production of "Lady Day at Emerson's Bar & Grill" by Lanie Robertson, directed by Skye LaFontaine at the Zebra Room, an intimate pop-up nightclub in the historic Charlie Chaplin studio in East Hollywood. This production will kick-off their inaugural 2026 season in Los Angeles.
We are an immersive, affordable, and equitable theatre collective, operating as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit fiscally sponsored through Omprakash. Tickets are capped at $10, and students are allowed to pay what they can, while at the same time we encourage audiences with the means to pay more, to do so, by making a tax-deductible donation before or after the show. All artists across cast, creative, and crew are paid the same weekly rate ($1,060) and are given an equity stake in the success of the production(s) they work on. Essentially, once we have covered the base production costs (including base wages) through our diversified nonprofit fundraising process, any additional money raised from donations made at the show, ticket sales, concessions, alcohol sales, and merchandise are added to a pot, which is split evenly between all artists after closing, based on hours worked. It is also worth noting that we are an explicitly anti-fascist, anti-racist, and anti-hate organization, and actively seek out artists who align with those values.
TIMELINE:
Auditions will continue to be handled in person or virtually via self-tapes. We will now be holding auditions in Hollywood starting Jan. 10th, where we will screen artists for their musical ability, particularly their ability to sound like Billie Holiday on a microphone.
Rehearses begin Jan. 16, 2026, (M-F 9 a.m.-1 p.m.) in Hollywood, CA; first tech on Feb. 2, 2026; runs Feb. 6-March 6, 2026, 6 performances/wk., Friday night, Saturday Matinee and Night, Sunday Matinee and Night, and Thursday Night. Opens and closes Friday, 25 performances total.
For Billie Holiday:
For consideration, submit your headshot, resume (with height), self-tape of yourself singing 16-32 bars of any Billie Holiday song in the style she sings, as well as a short statement on what Billie Holiday means to you as an artist. Feel free to include an acting/musical theatre/singing reel, though not at all required.
