Salary: $28.09/hour (in accordance with Local 8 Collective Bargaining Agreement)

Union Status: IATSE Local 8 (do not need to be union to apply but must join once hired).

Bristol Riverside Theatre is a mid-sized regional theatre whose mission is to engage audiences and artists alike with exceptional performances, inspired writing, and superior productions that motivate us to think harder, to feel more deeply, to laugh more joyfully, and to reflect on ourselves and the world in which we live. Located in the historic district of Bristol Borough, the theatre has a full-time staff of 12 employees. We offer over 200 performances per year, including 5 mainstage theatre productions, 38 presented theatre productions, and 48 concerts.

DESCRIPTION

Bristol Riverside Theatre seeks an experienced and collaborative Head Audio Engineer (A1) to oversee the implementation, operation, and maintenance of all audio and video systems for the theatre’s productions and events.

The A1 serves as the primary audio engineer for all productions and events, mixing performances and supervising the installation and operation of audio systems. This position works closely with visiting sound designers, the Production Manager, and IATSE Local 8 stagehands to realize sound designs and ensure the reliable operation of the theatre’s audio and video infrastructure. The ideal candidate is an organized planner and strong communicator who can collaborate effectively with designers, anticipate technical needs, and help maintain a high professional standard for the theatre’s sound systems.

This position reports to the Production Manager. Bristol Riverside Theatre operates under a collective bargaining agreement with IATSE Local 8, representing stagehands employed at the theatre.

This is a year-round position with variable weekly hours depending on the production schedule. Some weeks may require full-time hours. The A1 can expect to work approximately 1,500 hours annually (averaging about 29 hours per week).

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES


The Head Audio Engineer is responsible for the following:

  • Collaborate with visiting sound designers during pre-production, rehearsals, and technical processes to implement and maintain sound designs.

  • Program and operate the theatre’s Yamaha CL5 console during technical rehearsals, performances, concerts, and events.

  • Coordinate and manage RF systems for productions, including frequency coordination and operation of large wireless microphone packages (typically 8-16 channels).

  • Integrate and troubleshoot QLab playback systems and support video playback or projection needs as required.

  • Maintain the theatre’s audio and video equipment inventory, including coordinating equipment rentals and performing routine maintenance and basic repairs.

  • Prepare and maintain audio documentation and technical paperwork, including signal flow diagrams, patching, and system documentation.

  • Attend production meetings, coordinate audio labor with IATSE Local 8 stagehands, and work proactively with designers and the Production Manager to anticipate technical needs and resolve challenges.

EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS

Ideal candidates will possess:

  • 5+ years of experience mixing live theatrical audio, or equivalent professional experience.

  • Strong experience with digital audio consoles (experience with Yamaha CL series preferred).

  • Experience with wireless microphone systems and RF frequency coordination.

  • Working knowledge of Dante networked audio systems and QLab playback software.

  • Solid understanding of audio signal flow, gain structure, and system optimization (EQ, crossover, delay), with familiarity supporting video playback or projection systems.

  • Strong communication and collaboration skills when working with designers and production teams; experience working in a union theatre environment preferred.
