THE 25TH ANNUAL PUTNAM COUNTY SPELLING BEE

Book by Rachel Sheinkin
Music and Lyrics by Rebecca Feldman
Conceived by Rebecca Feldman
Directed by Alan Paul
Music Direction TBD
Choreographer TBD

1st Rehearsal: January 26, 2027
1st Performance: March 12, 2027
Opens: March 17, 2027
Closes: May 15, 2027

All roles open to all ethnicities.

SEEKING: (Casting all roles and Understudies)

THE SPELLERS:

CHIP TOLENTINO - [Doubles as JESUS] Vocal range: top B4 / bottom C3. The reigning spelling champion of Putnam County. Relatively athletic and social. He expects things to come easily to him. Lately, he’s been going through some weird changes, and things are slipping out of his control. Solo requires him to sing high notes.

LOGAINNE SCHWARTZANDGRUBENNIERE - Vocal range: top G5 / bottom G3. Youngest of the bee participants but driven by internal and external pressure, but above all by a desire to win so that she can make her two fathers happy. She’s not entirely comfortable in her body.

LEAF CONEYBEAR - [Doubles as CARL’S DAD] Vocal range: top A4 / bottom A2. A second alternate, Leaf never expected to compete. Suffers from A.D.D. but delights in his own wondering focus. Leaf does not expect to win — or even spell any word correctly, but he finds absolutely everything incredibly amusing. His mother forces him to wear his protective helmet to the bee.

WILLIAM BARFEE - Vocal range: top Bb4 / bottom C3. A kid with a host of health issues and a lot to prove. He is loud and combative — a go-to defensive posture. He’s the kid who becomes a bully to avoid being picked on. He’s known in the spelling circuit for his remarkable technique of spelling words on the floor with his foot. He was eliminated the previous year due to an adverse allergic reaction to peanuts and is here for vindication.

MARCY PARK - Vocal range: top Eb5 / bottom A3. The ultimate overachiever. She comes from a family where excellence is expected. Confident that she can beat the local competition. Her many talents include piano, dance, baton twirling, and martial arts.

OLIVE OSTROVSKY - Vocal range: top F#5 / A3. A word lover, Olive is an only child with often absent parents. She is very shy. She lives a quiet life and is often alone. She fills all her extra time by reading the dictionary.

THE ADULTS:

RONA LISA PERRETTI - [Doubles as OLIVE’S MOM] Vocal range: top E5 / bottom C4. Putnam’s long-time spelling bee hostess, a local realtor and a past champion of the bee. This is Rona’s day to be queen. She keeps the bee competition running smoothly by upholding protocol and conveying crucial information to the audience.

VICE PRINCIPAL DOUGLAS PANCH – He fell into education, less out of love and more like an ability. He’s stuck in his current job, endlessly waiting for a promotion. He was not happy to get a call to be the substitute but starts the bee eager to impress Rona Lisa.

MITCH MAHONEY - [Doubles as OLIVE’S DAD and DAN’S DAD) Vocal range: top A4 - bottom: E3. The Official Comfort Counselor. An ex-convict, Mitch is performing his community service at the bee by handing out juice boxes to losing students. He has no idea how to offer comfort.
