BREAKDOWN

FIRE AND RAIN

SEEKING:

HAYES - Male-Presenting; 18+, character ages from 17 — 31; Sensitive, complicated, self-involved,
and filled with doubts — or more simply put, an Artist. Hayes, for much of the play, feels the world is
against him, but will discover by play’s end that he has been responsible for the direction his life has
taken. He is likable and even charismatic, though his self-involvement is not attractive. Strong singer
and guitarist, tenor or high baritone with a soulful, folk-rock voice comfortable singing in the style of
James Taylor.

TERRY - Male-Presenting; character ages from 18 - 32; Wild, though not out of control, and smart,
though not an intellectual. Terry is politically-minded and idealistic, but the world has some punishing
lessons in store for him. By the play’s end, he has been gentled by his experiences — which include
profound PTSD. Strong singer, tenor or high baritone with a soulful, folk-rock voice comfortable
singing in the style of James Taylor. NOTE: Piano skills or another instrument is a plus but not
required.

SUSIE — Female Presenting; 18+, character ages from 17 - 31; Some fight for enough talent to have
a career as an artist…and some, like Susie, are gifted with the talent of 10 people put together, yet
don’t have the life skills to marshal that talent. Susie has been dealt tough cards by her family but she
emerges years later as confident and mature. Excellent, powerhouse singer with a wide range,
comfortable singing R&B and folk-rock.

HOLLIS Male-Presenting; character ages from 44 - 58; A hellion and a criminal. A shape-shifter,
capable of stepping out of the time-space continuum to give us a bit of narration. Dangerous. And the
smartest character in the play. Any vocal range. NOTE: guitar skills a plus but not required.

LOUISE — Female Presenting; 42; Lost in thought, lost in sadness, lost in regret. She has put too much of herself in another person so she pays a price when that person is no longer there.

EVELYN — Female-Presenting; character ages from 40 — 54; An old hippie…or more accurately an old Lefty/Union gal who’s making room for hippies. A tough, soulful champion.

WALLY — Male-Presenting; character ages from 21 — 35; Simple and seemingly without needs. Maybe masking a deeper soul than we at first suspect. Strong singer, tenor or baritone with a soulful, folk-rock voice comfortable singing in the style of James Taylor. NOTE: Bass guitar or skills on another instrument is a plus but not required.

TOM — Male-Presenting; 31; Confident. One of those businessmen who thinks they’re friendly to artists, but really they’re just businessmen.

VERNON — Male-Presenting; 47; His vocabulary and gentlemanly demeanor briefly disguise that he is a religious fanatic.

FRED — Male-Presenting; 50; A harried conservative DAD.

RICK BRICKNER — Male-Presenting; 32; A radio dee-jay, a rapist, and a terrible hang. You would leave any room he entered.

RALPH HULL — Male-Presenting; 35; He just wants to play loud rock-n-roll and shoot heroin, what’s the matter with that?

LUPE — Female-Presenting, this role is Latina; 38; An optimist and an idealist. True-blue.

NICOLETTE — Female Presenting; 29; A hippie born in the wrong decade. Sweet and a little stoned, and always up for a new idea.

GTO — Male Presenting; 45; Warren Oates from the 1971 movie “Two-Lane Blacktop.” It’s just so weird he’s in this play.

ROBIN — Female-Presenting; 18+ to play 14; What’s wrong with Robin? Sweet and unbowed…she does not speak, yet sings like a bird. A mystery.
