BREAKDOWN
HORIZON THEATRE 2026 SEASON
SYNOPSIS:
Just when Liz thinks her life can’t get any more chaotic, the universe hands her the one thing she definitely doesn’t want – an adorable, unshakeable, absolutely-determined-to-love-her dog! A heartwarming comedy about an unlikely friendship between a reluctant human and her persistent pup.
NOTE: The dogs should not act like dogs but rather embody the essence of a dog. A dog living in a human body rather than a human living in a dog body.
SEEKING:
LIZ - (Female identifying, 40-50) - reluctant dog mom who finds and takes in a stray that changes her life. She’s got a natural gravitas about her, but at the top of the play, she’s a little broken and a little stressed. She’s recently broken up with a long time boyfriend and is in a new apartment on her own.
DOG - (Female identifying, 30-40) - A loving, happy stray dog that Liz finds. An older, but enthusiastic golden retriever who gives unconditional love.
NELL - (Female identifying, 40-50) - Liz’s next door neighbor, a fast-talking broad who runs hot, which riles up her dog, Ruben. Much slighter than Ruben, but he knows who is boss. Nell is divorced from her female partner, and she raised 2 kids alone. She is determined to be friends with Liz. *also Liz’s Ex's Dog, Lady Jogger
RUBEN - (Male identifying 35-45) - Nell’s large, rambunctious dog. Ruben is nuts. He’s bigger than Nell, but he knows who is boss. *also Liz’s Ex, Passerby
SWING - (Male Identifying 30-50) - Plays multiple roles - SHELTER WORKER, JAMIE (Liz’s gossipy friend), DOG PARK GOER (50s-70s, female), MAN VET
