BREAKDOWN

DEAR EVAN HANSEN

SEEKING:

EVAN HANSEN – (Male Identifying, Any Ethnicity, Pop Tenor, G2-B4) 18+ to play late teens. Smart, sincere, and cripplingly self-conscious. Evan prefers to be in the background, too afraid to step forward into the spotlight and risk ridicule or, even worse, no one noticing him. His therapist has him write letters to himself about why each day will be good. When one of these letters falls into the wrong hands Evan finds himself thrust into the center of a serious situation that becomes national news.

ZOE MURPHY – (Female Identifying, Any Ethnicity, Pop Soprano F3-E5) 18+ to play late teens.
Connor's younger sister and Evan's longtime crush. She plays guitar in jazz band and couldn’t care less about the status games of high school. She feels ambivalence about her brother’s death, finding it difficult to forgive him for all he did, and forgive the part of herself that finds relief in the fact that he’s gone. She looks to Evan for reasons to find something good about her brother to hold onto.

CONNOR MURPHY – (Male Identifying, Any Ethnicity, Pop Bari-tenor G2-G4) 18+ to play late teens. An angry loner. Connor is one of Evan's classmates who is also an outcast, though he and Evan were never friends. He has been a troubled kid for as long as anyone can remember and is a source of endless concern to his long-suffering parents and sister. When he takes his own life, his parents find Evan’s letter and cling to it as a source for a side of their son they never knew.

CYNTHIA MURPHY – (Female Identifying, 40s, Any Ethnicity, Pop Soprano with belt, F#3-E5) Connor and Zoe’s mother. To Evan, she seems to be the perfect mother; nurturing, available, and willing to talk about anything. To her own children, it’s a bit more complicated. She is constantly trying to keep her fragile family from falling apart but is often unsuccessful

LARRY MURPHY – (Male Identifying, 40s, Any Ethnicity, Pop Bari-tenor F3-G4) Connor and Zoe’s
father who is often busy and distant. Larry shows a different face to the rest of the world, representing for Evan the dad he always wished for: strong, confident, and, more than anything, reliable

HEIDI HANSEN – (Female, 40s, Any Ethnicity, Pop Alto with a belt, F3-Eb5) Evan’s single mother.
Overworked and stretched too thin, Heidi loves her son fiercely but fears they have begun to grow apart. She is prepared to do anything to repair the damage. She works and goes to school at night, which often leaves Evan alone.

JARED KLEINMAN – (Male Identifying, Any Ethnicity, Pop Tenor A2-B4) 18+ to play late teens. Jared claims to be forced by his parents to hang out with family friend Evan, for whom he has nothing but disdain. Jared covers his own obvious insecurities with a well-practiced sarcasm and a know-it-all arrogance.

ALANA BECK – (Female Identifying, Any Ethnicity, Pop Soprano F3-E5) 18+ to play late teens. A
classmate of Evan's, she is a genuine person. Everything she does comes from a place of deep
honesty and tremendous feeling. She is always ready with a smile, or a note of encouragement. This hides the loneliness she feels underneath. She is constantly looking for academic and extracurricular activities to boost her collegiate chances.
