Video Watch Ariana DeBose Talk About Her Unusual Audition for West Side Story

The Golden Globe winner sang and danced for Steven Spielberg and Tony Kushner—but didn’t read (for a reason).

Ariana DeBose was sitting in a nail salon when she found out that she landed the role of Anita in West Side Story. According to the recent Golden Globe winner and current SAG Award nominee, it was a bit a shock given how her audition had gone. Check out the full story above from her January 13 interview on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon.

After getting the call to come in for an audition late the night before, DeBose went to Brooklyn to sing and dance for director Steven Spielberg and screenwriter Tony Kushner, but stopped short at doing a reading with so little time to prepare. “These are Tony Kushner-expanded scenes. They can be wordy, and they’re important—you gotta nail it. And, quite frankly, I’m not in the business of going into a room as a Black woman and not getting it right. You gotta come in prepared.”

In addition to talking about West Side Story, the Tony nominee talked about being the bullet in Hamilton, the time she accidentally dissed Meryl Streep while filming The Prom, and what’s it like to be offered carrots by Nicole Kidman. Check it out below.
