PBS continues its 13th season of Great Performances at the Met June 16 at noon (check local listings) with Carmen.
The filming captures the February 2019 performance of Richard Eyre's staging, which transports the action of Bizet's opera to the Spanish Civil War of the 1930s. Mezzo-soprano Clémentine Margaine sings the title role, with Roberto Alagna as Don José, Aleksandra Kurzak as Micaëla, and Alexander Vinogradov as Escamillo. Louis Langrée conducts.
The Metropolitan Opera production also features elements from a trio of Broadway veterans: recent The Ferryman Tony winner Rob Howell (sets and costumes), Tony winner Christopher Wheeldon (choreography), and King Kong and The Ferryman double-Tony nominee Peter Mumford (lighting).
Great Performances at the Met will continue July 7 with La Fille du Régiment with Pretty Yende, Javier Camarena, and Kathleen Turner, followed by Die Walküre in August and Dialogues des Carmélites in September.
