Recipients will be announced at a ceremony June 25 at the Winter Garden Theatre in the Ontario metropolis.
Productions of the musicals Seussical and We Will Rock You tied for top spot in the General Theatre Division with eight nominations each. Singkil snagged seven nominations in the Independent Theatre Division.
CanStage received 17 nominations for five shows, and Tarragon Theatre earned eight nominations. Lorraine Kimsa Theatre for Young People (LKTYP) took 16 nominations in total.
Playwrights Morris Panych, Mike McPhaden, Michael Hollingsworth, Michael Healey and Damien Atkins will compete in the General Theatre Division category of Outstanding New Play. In the same category in the Independent Theatre Division, the playwrights represented are Brandon & Kurt Firla, Tony Nardi, Bruce Alcock, Kate Alton, Rafael Barreto-Rivera, bpNichol, Paul Dutton, Steve MacCaffrey, Ross Manson, Catherine Hernandez, Erika Batdorf, Christine Horne, Matthew Romantini and Darren O'Donnell.
(A new works category indicates the health of a theatre community — showing audiences in Toronto are supporting new work, not just revivals or recent international titles.) The Toronto Alliance for the Performing Arts (TAPA) administers the awards, which bring together a wide range of Canadian and international artists from several performing arts disciplines and backgrounds.
