Tony nominee Mary Bridget Davies' new live album, Freedom of My Mind, releases to the public September 1. Recorded in front of a studio audience at Power Station NYC, the album is inspired by Virginia Woolf's book A Room of One's Own. Davies previously starred in a concert staging inspired by the text in 2022.
A Room of One's Own is considered one of the most influential feminist texts of the early 20th century, combining fictional prose and exploratory essays to examine the plight of women in a patriarchal society. Woolf's "Judith Shakespeare," in particular, became a foundational cultural reference, inspiring compositions, literary movements, and numerous writing retreats.
"Women are the heartbeat of the world. What we achieve regularly, without support and cloaked in shame is miraculous. With this album, I want to celebrate us and tell it like it is. Honor who we have lost and empower the rest,” says Davies.
Freedom of My Mind includes songs from the 2022 concert musical adaptation, as well as a selection of songs written for the late Janis Joplin. Davies and Joplin are deeply intertwined, with Davies previously receiving a Tony nomination for playing Joplin in A Night With Janis Joplin.
In addition to Davies, Freedom of My Mind features Clint DeGanon on drums, Mark Berman on piano, Alex Prezzano on guitar, and Dave Richards on bass.
