The Pirate Queen

The musical, featuring music by Schönberg, lyrics by Boublil (adapted in English by Richard Maltby Jr. and John Dempsey), and a book by Boublil, Schönberg, and Maltby Jr., is based on the real-life story of Grace O’Malley. It follows the Chieftain who led the resistance against Queen Elizabeth’s conquest of Ireland.

Following a 2006 tryout in Chicago, the musical made its Broadway premiere in the spring of 2007 at the Hilton Theatre (now the Lyric). The Frank Galati-helmed production starred Tony nominee Stephanie J. Block, Hadley Fraser, and Linda Balgord and played just over 100 total performances before closing in June.

The Pirate Queen made its U.K. premiere from London’s Hounslow Light Opera Company in 2015 before a U.S. regional debut at Utah’s Hale Centre Theatre in 2016.
