The Eric Rockwell-Joanne Bogart musical began previews Feb. 2 and officially opened Feb. 10. When it closes, the acclaimed production will have played nine previews and 318 regular performances.
The Music of Musicals — The Musical!, which was the longest-running show in the York Theatre Company's 35-year history (it played 256 performances there), reopened at Dodger Stages, Stage Five, in February. Featuring music by Eric Rockwell, lyrics by Joanne Bogart and a book by Rockwell and Bogart, The Musical of Musicals is a satire of various musical theatre genres. One story is played five times, each in the style of a different musical theatre composer or team, including Rodgers and Hammerstein and Stephen Sondheim. Producers are the York Theatre Company, Melanie Herman, W. David McCoy and James Morgan.
Directed and choreographed by Pamela Hunt, the show's original cast returned for the Dodgers run, including Craig Fols, Lovette George and authors Rockwell and Bogart. The design team comprises Mary Jo Dondlinger (lighting), John Carver Sullivan (costumes) and Morgan (set design).
The Musical of Musicals — The Musical! was nominated for a 2004 Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Musical, and the CD is available in stores on the Jay Records label.
Regional productions are expected to appear in the coming seasons. Prince Music Theater in Philadelphia is currently presenting the Philly premiere of the show.
