The 2024 Olivier Award winners were named in a starry April 14 ceremony at Royal Albert Hall, with West End favorite Hannah Waddingham returning as host for the second consecutive year.
The Broadway-bound revival of Andrew Lloyd Webber's Sunset Boulevard led the pack of winners, taking home seven honors, including Best Musical Revival, Best Actor and Actress in a Musical, and Best Director.
The dramatically reimagined take on Andrew Lloyd Webber, Don Black, and Christopher Hampton's stage musical of the 1950 film begins Broadway previews September 28, as previously reported. Nicole Scherzinger and Tom Francis are slated to reprise their now Olivier–winning performances as faded silent film star Norma Desmond and struggling screenwriter Joe Gillis, respectively.
The honors for Best New Play and Musical went to Dear England and Operation Mincemeat, respectively, while the Andrew Scott-led solo Vanya took home the award for Best Revival in the play category.
Dear England also has further plans ahead. The piece is in the process of becoming a limited series for the BBC, with international distribution in the works as well.
The Olivier Awards, the West End's top theatrical honors, were established in 1976 as the Society of West End Theatre Awards. Renamed for the British actor Laurence Olivier in 1984, they are considered the equivalent of Broadway's Tony Awards. Past hosts of the Olivier ceremony have included Michael Ball, Imelda Staunton, Clive Anderson, Gemma Arterton, Stephen Mangan, Hugh Bonneville, Sheridan Smith, Lenny Henry, and Catherine Tate.
