Steve Martin and Edie Brickell’s Tony- and Grammy-nominated musical Bright Star is planning to tour the U.S., starting in Salt Lake City in 2018, music director Peter Asher announced December 12.
Asher announced news of the tour from the stage of New York’s Town Hall Theatre at a reunion concert of the show's cast, which was hosted by Martin and Brickell. No confirmation from the songwriters was immediately forthcoming, nor were specific dates, casting or venues for the tour.
After saying that while the show was not a hit in the sense that it did not have a long Broadway run, Asher said, “I've never been associated with something that felt more like a success than this project." He then added that producer Joey Parnes has assured him that a touring version of the show is "definitely happening" and his beginning in early 2018 in Salt Lake City, "at least that's the rumor I heard."
There was no immediate confirmation from Parnes.
Bright Star opened March 24, 2016 and played 109 performances at the Cort Theatre. It was nominated for five Tony Awards including Best Musical, Best Score, Best Book, Best Orchestrations, and Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical (Carmen Cusack). The original cast album was nominated for a Grammy Award December 11.
