We're still unclear about what's happening with the Tonys, but we've got official winners for the 72nd Annual Outer Critics Circle Awards! Some Like It Hot took the most categories with five wins including Outstanding New Musical. The show, currently running at Broadway's Shubert Theatre, was the second most-nominated musical going into the awards, behind New York, New York. That production, playing the St. James, took two categories, including Scenic Design (Beowulf Boritt) and Choreography (Susan Stroman).
Leopoldstadt won the most categories of any play this season, with three wins including Outstanding New Broadway Play. New York Theatre Workshop's Broadway-bound revival of Merrily We Roll Along was another notable winner, taking both Lead and Featured Performer in an Off-Broadway musical for Jonathan Groff and Lindsay Mendez, respectively.
See the full list of winners below.
This year's awards is the first for the Outer Critics to use newly reconstructed acting categories. The newly gender neutral categories have been split into Broadway and Off-Broadway, where previous years considered both Broadway and Off-Broadway within the same, traditionally gendered categories.
An awards ceremony celebrating this year's winners will be held May 25 at Bruno Walter Auditorium at Lincoln Center's New York Public Library for the Performing Arts.
As previously announced, a Special Achievement Award was bestowed on fight director B.H. Barry, honoring a six-decade career, including this season's Camelot at Lincoln Center Theater.
