The stage adaptation of Apple TV+'s Schmigadoon! will come to Broadway's Nederlander Theatre next year. The Golden Age Broadway musical–themed show will play a limited run beginning April 4 ahead of an April 20 opening night, with performances continuing through September 6. Casting is to be announced.
The work—which features a book, music, and lyrics by series creator Cinco Paul—made its world premiere earlier this year at Washington, D.C.'s Kennedy Center, with series choreographer Christopher Gattelli directing and choreographing. Creatives for the Broadway bow are to be announced. See what critics had to say about the premiere run here.
“Schmigadoon! is a love letter to the Golden Age of movie musicals,” says lead producer Lorne Michaels, who also produced the series, in a statement. “It’s a little bit nostalgic and a lot of fun. We’re very excited to bring it to Broadway.”
The musical follows the plot of the show's first season, which follows real-world couple Josh and Melissa as they find themselves in Schmigadoon, a mysterious and magical world populated with characters, plots, songs, and dance numbers plucked from Golden Age musicals like Oklahoma!, The Music Man, Carousel, and more. Paul's adaptation includes all of the songs from the series' Grammy-nominated score plus some new titles, including songs cut from the series and new songs.
Michaels is joined on the producing team by Micah Frank, Caroline Maroney for Broadway Video, and Christine Schwarzman and Megan O'Keefe for No Guarantees Productions. The Telsey Office will handle casting, and TT Partners is serving as general manager.
Schmigadoon! premiered on Apple TV+ in 2021, with a second season in 2023 that sent its characters to Schmicago, complete with parodies of '70s musicals like Pippin, Godspell, and Sweeney Todd. Apple cancelled the show's third season while it was still in production, though Paul previously told Playbill that his goal is to bring all three seasons of Schmigadoon to the stage.
