Halle Bailey, one half of the R&B duo Chloe x Halle, has been tapped to star in the upcoming live-action remake of Disney’s The Little Mermaid. The Grown-ish alum, according to The Hollywood Reporter, will play the title role in Rob Marshall’s adaptation.
While additional casting has yet to be confirmed, earlier reports have revealed that Oscar nominee Melissa McCarthy is in talks to play Ursula, with Jacob Tremblay and Awkwafina eyeing the roles of Flounder and Scuttle.
"It was abundantly clear that Halle possesses that rare combination of spirit, heart, youth, innocence, and substance — plus a glorious singing voice — all intrinsic qualities necessary to play this iconic role," Marshall said in a statement.
Alan Menken returns to the title following his work on the 1989 animated movie—winning Oscars for his score and, with the late lyricist Howard Ashman, the song "Under the Sea"—and the 2008 Broadway adaptation. For the updated take, the composer will team up with Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda. (Miranda also stared in Disney's recent Marhsall-helmed flick, Mary Poppins Returns).
Production is expected to begin in 2020.
