The Edinburgh Festival Fringe is the biggest arts festival in the world, with nearly 3,500 shows. This year, Playbill is in Edinburgh for the entire month in August for the festival and we’re taking you with us. Follow along as we cover every single aspect of the Fringe, aka our real-life Brigadoon!
As part of our Edinburgh Fringe coverage, Playbill is seeing a whole lotta shows—and we're sharing which ones you absolutely must see if you're only at the Fringe for a short amount of time. Consider these Playbill Picks a friendly, opinionated guide as you try to choose a show at the festival.
Billed as “Wes Anderson meets Hitchcock meets Spaghetti Western,” The Man Who Thought He Knew Too Much is a hilarious romp around the world. Four talented physical actors use their bodies (and a couple newspapers) to conjure seemingly hundreds of characters, scenes, vehicles, weapons, doors, furniture, and even lasers.
We follow Roger (Paul Lofferon), an ads man, as unexpected events upend his strict daily routine and sweep him up in an international crime syndicate. Both investigator and target, Roger physically weaves through all the villainous traps laid out to ensnare him. (It’s like if all the James Bond movies were stitched together and performed live.)
Lofferon has impressive circus talents, as does the entire cast. Everyone’s movements (throwing, catching, flipping, flailing) are unerringly precise—they pull off the kind of well-coordinated stunts live that, in a movie, you’d assume took hours and multiple takes. Definitely see The Man Who Thought He Knew Too Much for its imaginative storytelling, clever plotting, and super-smart direction.
The Man Who Thought He Knew Too Much runs until August 28 at Pleasance Courtyard in its Forth space. Get tickets here. See what else Playbill recommends at this space here.
