Pacific Opera Project co-founders Josh Shaw and Stephen Karr decided to put a sci-fi spin on a Mozart classic for a single performance at the Ford Ampitheatre in Hollywood September 3.

Abduction from the Seraglio is an opera about two women kidnapped by pirates and sold to a harem and the Spanish captain who saves them.

According to the L.A. Times, Shaw (who is also POP’s artistic director) imbued the show with a Star Trek theme when the word “abduction” in the title made him think of aliens and science fiction. He decided to put a campy Star Trek lens on the work for an English adaptation of the piece. Belmonte in the original score is now Captain Belmonte, based on Captain Kirk; abductee Kostanze is Lieutenant Costanza, likened to Star Trek’s Uhura. Mr. Pedrillo is the Spock-inspired character for the parody.
