Featuring a book, music, and lyrics by Jewelle Blackman, the work is presented as part of The Broadway Workroom Series.

Open Jar Studios' Broadway Workroom Series is presenting Jewelle Blackman (Hadestown)'s Rooted: A Musical Poem with two performances October 17 at the Manhattan rehearsal space. The series lets audiences get a look at the developmental process of new musicals.

The cast will include Khaila Wilcoxon (Redwood), Kay Trinidad (Hadestown), Malcolm Armwood (Hadestown), Trent Saunders (Dead Outlaw), Sojourner Brown (Purpose), Timothy Hughes (The Greatest Showman), Isidora Kecman (Life After), and Tara Jackson (Hadestown).

Press notes describe Rooted as "a contemporary fable for all the ages" that is set in Central Park and features R&B music. Blackman's Hadestown co-star T. Oliver Reid is directing the upcoming performances, with music direction by Richard Baskin, Jr. (Soul Patrol). The presentations will also feature musicians Angelique Montes, Steven Jackson, and Fung Chern Wei.
