Off-Broadway Avenue Q Surpasses Original Broadway Run Today | Playbill

News Off-Broadway Avenue Q Surpasses Original Broadway Run Today The current Off-Broadway production of the hit musical Avenue Q plays its 2,535th performance Nov. 16, surpassing its original, Tony-winning Broadway run.

The musical, with a score by Robert Lopez (The Book of Mormon, Frozen) and Jeff Marx, uses a mixed cast of puppets and human actors to tell the story of a young man trying to find his "purpose" in life after college.

Avenue Q was developed at the Eugene O'Neill Theater Center in 2002, opened at the Vineyard Theatre Off-Broadway in March 2003 and transferred to the Golden Theatre on Broadway in July 2003. The show took the unusual step in 2009 of transferring back to Off-Broadway at New World Stages, just a few blocks away.

The musical played 2,534 Broadway performances before its move to Off-Broadway. The combined total of 5,069 performances would have made it the ninth-longest running Broadway show if it had stayed at the Golden (and not closed).
