Mexico's newest musical, Houdini: La Magia del Amor (Houdini: The Magic of Love); continues to thrill audiences as it celebrated its first 100 performances, March 26.
Actress Rebecca Jones and actor Alejandro Camacho, one of Mexico's most popular theatre and TV marriages, were the special guests that unveiled the traditional commemorative plate. The Camacho-Jones expressed their admiration for this musical, which according to Camacho's words "is a musical of the best quality, for which all Mexicans must be proud". The audience, which was deeply moved by the romanticism of the show; gave a standing ovation for the cast and the creative team.
Among the celebrities seen at that very special night were Sylvia Pasquel, Kitty De Hoyos, Atala Sarmiento and Juan Jose Origel.
Enrique Chi, who plays Harry Houdini, was recently awarded by the Mexican Association of Theatre Journalists (Asociacion de Periodistas Teatrales, APT) as Best Actor in a Musical, defeating Roberto Blandon, who was nominated for his performance as the Beast in Disney's Beauty and the Beast. Houdini also received the APT award for Best Musical as well the Best Score Award from the Mexican Association of Theatre Critics and Journalists (ACPT).
Other leads are Lorena de la Garza (Bess Houdini), Lupita Sandoval (Cecilia Weiss) and Luis Elizondo (Theo Houdini). Directed by Rafael Perrin, this romantic and mysterious musical features a score by Antonio Calvo (music) and Patricia Perrin (lyrics). According to composer Antonio Calvo, a live CD with the songs from Houdini: La Magia del Amor will be released mid-April. The show has already been recorded, but the negotiations with several record labels are still in progress. We hear rumors that BMG is the most likely record company to release this eagerly awaited CD.
