News Mexican Critics Announce Awards for 1996-97 Season The Mexican Association of Theatre Critics (Asociacion Mexicana de Criticos de Teatro, AMCT) will award the best of the 1996-97 theatre season in Mexico City at their 49th annual ceremony that will take place in a ballroom of one of the hotels located in Paseo de la Reforma Avenue on August 11.

The Mexican Association of Theatre Critics (Asociacion Mexicana de Criticos de Teatro, AMCT) will award the best of the 1996-97 theatre season in Mexico City at their 49th annual ceremony that will take place in a ballroom of one of the hotels located in Paseo de la Reforma Avenue on August 11.

The winners were announced by the president of the association, Bruno Bert.

Each award has a name of a Mexican theatre celebrity, for example the Best Actor Award is called the Fernando Soler Award after the late Mexican actor, the Best Scenic Design Award is called the Julio Prieto Award as a tribute to the late designer, so each award has been named to honor those who made great contributions for the theatre in Mexico.

Here is a list of the winners:

Francois Baguer Award for a lifetime achievement: Xavier Rojas for his 50-year career. Rafael Solana Award for Best Production: "El Caballo de Olmedo" by Lope de Vega, directed by Luis de Tavira.

Juan Ruiz de Alarcon Award for Best Play: "El Viaje Superficial" by Jorge Ibarguengoitia.

Robert W. Lerner Award for Best Musical: "Beauty and the Beast", produced by Walt Diney Theatrical Productions and OCESA.

Concepcion Sada Award for Best Children Play or Musical: "Marcelino, Pan y Vino-El Musical".

Jose de Jesus Aceves Award for Best Director of a Play or Musical: Luis de Tavira for "El Cantaro Roto".

Julio Prieto Award for Best Scenic Design: Alejandro Luna for "El Cantaro Roto".

Fernando Soler Award for Best Actor in a Drama: Roberto Sosa for "Equus".

Maria Teresa Montoya Award for Best Actress in a Drama: Martha Verduzco for "Los Signos del Zodiaco".

Oscar Ortiz de Pinedo Award for Best Actor in a Comedy: Otto Sirgo for "PD: Your Cat is Dead".

Anita Blanch Award for Best Actress in a Comedy: Emma Teresa Armendariz for "Ser Infiel si es Algo Personal".

Joaquin Pardave Award for Best Actor in a Musical: Mario Ivan Martinez for "Kiss Of The Spider Woman".

Maria Conesa Award for Best Actress in a Musical: Lolita Cortes for "Beauty and the Beast".

Fernando Mendoza Award for Best Featured Actor in a Play or a Musical: Sergio Saldivar for "Beauty and the Beast".

Award for Best Featured Actress in a Play or a Musical (Note- This award has not been named yet): Pilar Souza for "El Cantaro Roto".

Julio Castillo Award for Best Director of a Vanguard Production: Alejandro Veliz for "Niaque o de Piojo y Acrores".

Seki Sano Award for Best Foreign Production: The Royal Shakespeare Company for "The Comedy of Errors".

Maria Douglas Award for Best One-Man/Woman Show: Angelica Aragon for "Maquillaje".

Jorge Landeta Award for Best Young Actor in a Play or a Musical: Rodrigo Vidal for "Los Muchachos de Nueva York".

Yolanda Guillaumin Award for Best Young Actress in a Play or a Musical: Eugenia Lenero for "La Rodaja".

Oscar Liera Award for Best Book: Elena Guiochins for "Mutis".

Award for Best Debutant Director (Note- this award has not been named yet): Juliana Fester for "Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead".

Enrique Aguilar Award for Best Debutant Actor in a Play or a Musical: Diego Luna for "El Cantaro Roto".

Martha Elba Award for Best Debutant Actress in a Play or a Musical: Martha Fernanda for "Los Muchachos de Nueva York".

Manuel Lozano Award for Best Child Actor or Actress: Immanol Landeta for "Marcelino, Pan y Vino-El Musical".

Rosetta Aranda Award for Best Puppet Show: Grupo Al Fin for "Pagliacci".

Armando Valdez Peza Award for Best Costumes: Ann Hould-Ward for "Beauty and the Beast"

Silvestre Revueltas Award for Best Musical Score: Cesar Balcazar for "Los Muchachos de Nueva York".

Jose Hugo C. award for Best Regional Production: Marco Vyera for "Desguesadero al Crepusculo".
