The album captures selections from Minnelli's sold-out Jan. 6-26 concerts at the Winter Garden Theatre in 1974. Bob Fosse directed the concerts, which were titled Liza. The late Fred Ebb authored the book to the concert that featured several songs with his collaborator, John Kander. Marvin Hamlisch served as musical director.
The original LP was released in April 1974 by Columbia Records, but was quickly pulled from the market due to contractual conflicts over songs from the film of "Cabaret."
The Masterworks recording marks the first time the entire show will be officially available on disc and for digital download. Three live bonus tracks will also be part of the release, including Stevie Wonder’s “You and I” and the standards “It Had to Be You” and “My Shining Hour.”
The digital download will arrive April 3 with the in-store release to follow May 8.
"The thing about doing a show like Liza is that every song means something," Minnelli said in a statement. "Fred and John were so brilliant at building a show, plus I had Marvin, so we tried all kinds of different rundowns and finally came up with what you hear on the album, and thank God it worked! But you keep trying, and don’t get satisfied with anything but the best. It brings back so many memories. I always feel like I've never done anything. It's true! So to have this come out, and to be reminded of how it was and how it was received, it's just lovely!" The original LP included an opening medley of "Liza With A 'Z'"/"Ring Them Bells"/"I Can See Clearly Now"/"Maybe This Time"/"Cabaret," as well as such songs as "A Quiet Thing," "More Than You Know," "There Is A Time," "The Circle" and "I'm One of the Smart Ones."
