Looking Back on the Magic of Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again’s ‘Super Trouper’ Sequence
As the movie musical is released in stores and digitally, the stars discuss filming the joyous finale.
One of the brightest spots of the summer begins with a literal bright spot: Cher, in a particularly Cher-like wig, stepping into a giant spotlight and kicking off the finale sequence of Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again with a high-energy rendition of “Super Trouper.” Her co-stars join in, resulting in, at last, a surreal cross-generational reunion of Dynamos, dads, and everyone in between.
“You have to have something upbeat, because it’s a sad ending in a way,” Lily James, who plays Young Donna, told Playbill during a recent press trip to Skopelos, the Greek island that served as the filming location of the first movie. “It’s joyous, but there’s a feeling of loss, so you have to turn it on its head. And what better song?”

Each young cast member had the chance to collaborate with their “legacy” counterpart for their one shared moment on screen. “It’s a weird alternate reality that I thoroughly enjoyed,” Jessica Keenan Wynn says, describing the experience of working with Christine Baranski—while in matching Tanya wigs.
While the Dynamos came up with appropriately exquisite choreography, the Young Dads were climbing uphill: “We were all slightly pathetic,” admitted Josh Dylan. Hugh Skinner recalls his “genius” idea with Colin Firth that required minimal dancing, which he almost got away with.

But of course, at the center of it all is Cher, which was not lost on any of the cast members. “You realize it’s Cher, and I can’t believe we’re in the same space. But she’s so cool and so generous, and just a legend in the most normal way as well.
“So relatable,” Wynn added before catching herself.
Whether or not you’d call Cher “so relatable,” you can now revisit her performance in Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again on Blu-ray, DVD, and via digital and streaming platforms.
