The Rink premiered on Broadway February 9, 1984, starring Chita Rivera and Liza Minnelli, at the Martin Beck Theatre. The production was the first collaboration between John Kander, Fred Ebb, and Terrence McNally. The trio (and their star) would later reunite for Kiss of the Spider Woman and The Visit, with Rivera earning Tony Awards for both The Rink and Kiss of the Spider Woman.
In the musical, Anna (Rivera) is about to sell her family's dilapidated roller-skating rink when her estranged daughter Angel (Minnelli) returns after a long absence, hoping to save the rink and patch things up with her mother. The score contains such Kander and Ebb classics as "Colored Lights," "Chief Cook and Bottle Washer," and the title song.
