Liesl Tommy's new staging of Passing Strange, which premiered at London's Young Vic earlier this year, has set a North American premiere at Massachusetts' American Repertory Theater. Tommy will direct the U.S. run, with performances beginning May 20, 2025, ahead of a May 30 opening night. The run will continue through June 29 at the Cambridge company.
Olivier-winning London Hamilton star Giles Terera will reprise his performance as Narrator in his North American debut. Further casting is to be announced.
The musical, following a young, Black musician on a quest to find himself, premiered on Broadway in 2008, featuring a book and lyrics by Stew and music by Stew and Heidi Rodewald, in collaboration with Annie Dorsen. Stew won a 2008 Tony for his book.
Also returning for the U.S. bow will be music supervisor Brandon Michael Nase, who's also penned additional arrangements and orchestrations; choreographer Dickson Mbi; set and costume designer Ben Stones; lighting designer Richard Howell; sound designer Tom Gibbons; video designer Will Duke; wig, hair, and makeup designer Suzanna Scotcher; and voice and dialect coach Hazel Holder.
A.R.T. subscriptions are currently available at AmericanRepertoryTheater.org. Single tickets will go on sale at a later date.
Next year, Carnegie Hall's house band will perform Bernstein’s “Kaddish” Symphony, unfinished works by Schubert, and the final concert of Conductor Bernard Labadie.
