Stan Zimmerman's Latine reimagining of Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett's The Diary of Anne Frank will get another Los Angeles run at Colony Theatre in Burbank November 5-6. Two student matinees are already sold out, but tickets remain for an evening performance.
Emiliano Torres and Genesis Ochoa will again star as Otto and Anne Frank, respectively. Both have been with the production since it was first staged eight years ago. Director Zimmerman's take on the Tony- and Pulitzer-winning work is adapted by Wendy Kesselman.
Staged seven times so far, the production was inspired by a 2018 CNN Newsroom segment about a Jewish woman in L.A. who housed a Latine mother and her daughters following the deportation of her husband. Zimmerman, a stage and TV writer who is the production's director, says the unlikely concept has only become more timely in the years since its first mounting. The cast will also include Mariangelica Cuervo, Emily Trujillo, Danny Pardo, Jackie Osorio, David Gurrola, Rebecca Asquino, Charlie Farrell, Aris Alvarado, Hector Hernandez, Ben Martinez, Keara Bird, Noah F. Madril, and Ina Loazia. Casting is by Julie Gale.
“When we originally presented this play eight years ago, many insisted that any comparisons to what was happening with child separation at the border and Nazis in WWII was over-reacting. But looking at the current situation in many of our major cities, the phrase ‘never again’ is today," says Zimmerman in a statement. "I can’t think of a better time to be provoking discussion, especially with the story and insightful words of Anne Frank."
Pop-Up Playhouse, Tracey Rooney, Wilson Cruz, and Burbank Human Relations Council are producing the run, which is sponsored by The Rosenthal Family Foundation. Past performances have been held at Dorie Theatre, Temple Emanuel, Chutzpah Festival, and A Place Called Home. Lizzie Kramer is the assistant director.
