Initial casting has been announced for the Reprise 2.0 production of the Tony-winning musical Grand Hotel, which will be presented October 24–November 4 at the UCLA Freud Playhouse.
The cast will be led by Jonah Platt (Wicked) as the Baron, Maxwell Caulfield (Grease 2, Dynasty, The Colbys) as Preysing, Emmy nominee Sharon Lawrence (NYPD Blue) as the Ballerina, and Tony winner Hal Linden (Barney Miller, The Rothschilds) as the Doctor.
Arthur Allan Seidelman will direct the production, which will feature choreography by Kay Cole.
Based on the 1929 Vicki Baum novel and 1932 MGM feature, Grand Hotel has music and lyrics by Robert Wright and George Forrest, additional music and lyrics by Maury Yeston, and a book by Luther Davis. The Broadway production premiered in 1989 and garnered five Tony Awards, running 1,017 performances.
The show takes place over a weekend in Berlin’s elegant Grand Hotel. Through revolving doors enters a varied cast of eccentric guests: a ballerina afraid of her advancing years, her dashing younger lover—a baron (also a jewel thief), a fatally ill Jewish bookkeeper who wants to spend his last days in luxury, and an honest businessman gone bad with his secretary who dreams of Hollywood success.
