News Joe Cassidy to Join the Cast of Broadway’s Waitress The If/Then and Next to Normal alum will join the musical in January 2017.

Joe Cassidy will assume the role of the curmudgeonly diner chef Cal in the Broadway musical Waitress, beginning in January 2017 through February 12, according to a production spokesperson. His first date in the show has not been set.

Cassidy will be filling in for original cast member and Drama Desk nominee Eric Anderson, who will return to the show February 14.

Cassidy’s Broadway credits include If/Then; Next To Normal; Dirty Rotten Scoundrels; Les Miserables; 1776; Show Boat; and Catch Me If You Can, in which he understudied Norbert Leo Butz. Off-Broadway credits include Working (Drama Desk Award) and Listen To My Heart. He has appeared in TV/web series including Blue Bloods; Elementary; Law & Order; and Submissions Only.

Cassidy will appear in Waitress opposite Tony Award winner Jessie Mueller (Jenna), Charity Angél Dawson (Becky), Tony Award nominee Christopher Fitzgerald (Ogie), Drew Gehling (Dr. Pomatter), Caitlin Houlahan (Dawn), Dakin Matthews (Joe), William Popp (Earl), Cate Elefante, Thay Floyd, Henry Gottfried, Molly Hager, Aisha Jackson, Molly Jobe, Max Kumangai, Anastacia McClesky, Ella Dane Morgan, Jeremy Morse, Olivia Phillip, Stephanie Torns, and Ryan Vasquez.

Mueller has announced that she will play her last performance in the role of master pie baker Jenna March 26, 2017. Mueller, who won a Tony Award for her performance in Beautiful: The Carole King Musical, was nominated for Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical for her work in Waitress. No successor in the role has been announced yet.

Based on the 2007 film of the same title, Waitress tells the story of Jenna (Mueller), an expert pie maker in a small town, who dreams of a way out of her loveless marriage. A baking contest in a nearby county and the town’s new doctor (Gehling) may offer her a chance at a new life, while her fellow waitresses (Dawson and Houlahan) offer their own recipes to happiness. But Jenna must find the courage and strength within herself to rebuild her life.
