Beyond the Steps: Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, traces the origins of the legendary company and captures key moments in its history, such as the tour to Russia in 2005 and the recent move into a state-of-the-art facility on Manhattan's West Side.

Judith Jamison's contributions to the company, which she joined in 1965, are also highlighted. Jamison was appointed artistic director upon Ailey's death in 1989; the documentary explores her creation of the ballet Love Stories.

Also featured in the telecast are dancer Dwana Adiaha Smallwood, Ailey associate artistic director Masazumi Chaya, and executive director Sharon Gersten Luckman.

The documentary is produced and directed by Phil Bertelsen.
