The revival, directed by Christopher Luscombe, will go on a 14-stop U.K. tour, starting March 16 at Brighton’s Theatre Royal, finishing July 1 at the Liverpool Empire. Bedella, who won a 2004 Best Actor Olivier Award for creating the role of Satan/Warm-Up Man in Jerry Springer – The Opera, will play Frank N Furter opposite Shaw’s Janet.
Shaw, formerly of the pop group Hear’Say, made her stage debut as a ten-year-old in a Liverpool Empire production of Annie. More recently she appeared in West End productions of Summer Holiday and as the narrator in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.
First seen at the Royal Court’s Theatre Upstairs in 1973 – and turned into a movie in 1975 - the musical has built a famously loyal fan base, who often turn up to either screenings or stagings dressed in the same fishnet-stocking garb as some of the characters.
The story follows squeaky-clean sweethearts Brad and Janet on an adventure during which they encounter the dastardly and decadent Frank N Furter.
O’Brien’s score includes such songs as “Sweet Transvestite,” “Damn It Janet” and “Time-Warp.”
