Produced by Latinx Playwrights Circle, WP Theater, and The Sol Project, Christin Eve Cato's Sancocho begins previews March 23. The Off-Broadway premiere will open its limited engagement March 11 and play through April 9 at WP Theater. Opening night is set for March 23.
Featuring an all-Latiné cast and design team, the play stars Zuleyma Guevara (Bruise & Thorn, Gotham) and Shirley Rumierk (Good Person, Manifest) as Puerto Rican sisters Renata and Caridad. As tension between the two flares, the pair are forced to face their father's declining health, and the things that divide them: cultural clashes, old wounds, and long-kept secret. Will the sisters be able to find a way forward together?
Rebecca Martinez (Miss You Like Hell) directs Sancocho which features scenic design by Raul Abrego (Ain't Misbehavin'), costume design by Harry Nadal (Miss You Like Hell), lighting design by Maria-Cristina Fusté (Jagged Little Pill), and sound design by Germán Martinez (Into The Woods), production stage management by E Sara Barnes (Jersey Boys). Casting is by Kelly Gillespie.
The work was originally developed at Latinx Playwrights Circle, and was subsequently produced by Vision Latino Theatre Company in October 2022 as part of Chicago International Latino Theater Festival Destinos.
