The Hypocrites, the Chicago theatre company under the artistic direction of Sean Graney, have canceled the final two productions of their 20th anniversary season due to a disappointing turnout.
A statement from Graney reads, “It kills me to cut the season short and release so many amazing artists and staff from promised employment. The money is just not there to continue as we have been. The Hypocrites will retain its nonprofit status. I will work on drafting a new mission and artistic model for our future and share more information in the next few weeks. I want to thank our loyal artists, employees, donors and fans for their understanding and dedication.”
The Hypocrites’ current production, Cinderella at the Theater of Potatoes, which was to run through January 8, 2017, will now close December 31; and the company’s production of Wit, which is already in rehearsals, will cut its run short, now playing January 20–February 19.
The remaining shows of the 20th anniversary season, The House of Martin Guerre and the Chicago premiere of Lynn Nottage’s Las Meninas, have been canceled.
