James Earl Jones celebrates his birthday January 17. Take a look at the Tony-winning actor’s stage triumphs in a career that spans over 50 years.

The performer made his Broadway debut as Edward in Sunrise at Campobello, beginning a six decade career on the Main Stem. Throughout his vast career, Jones won Tony Awards for The Great White Hope and Fences, and received additional nominations for On Golden Pond and The Best Man. In 2017, the stage favorite was also the recipient of a Lifetime Achievement Tony Award.

Jones last appeared on Broadway with Cicely Tyson in a revival of D.L. Coburn’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play, The Gin Game.

Celebrate Over 60 Years of James Earl Jones On Stage

For his work onscreen, Jones is the recipient of an honorary Academy Award and an Oscar nominee for the film adaptation of The Great White Hope. While best known for his voice work as Darth Vader in Star Wars and Mufasa in The Lion King—a performance he reprised in Disney’s 2019 live-action adaptation—the star has appeared in films like Coming to America, Field of Dreams, and The Hunt for Red October.
