Teatro LATEA will open its fall season Off-Broadway with Candela, a new musical written and directed by Jazz Vilá. The work comes to New York following an earlier run in Havana, Cuba. Performances will be given in Spanish September 8-10 and 22-24, and in English September 15-17. The English translation is new for the U.S. premiere.
Vilá will also star in the title role, the stage name of aspiring film actress Gertrudis Calvario, who is looking forward to her first starring role until an accident ruins everything.
Yordanka Ariosa will co-star as Perla Rosa, a singer premiering a new album who meets Candela under unfortunate circumstances. The work, according to press notes, explores "resistance, realization, the value of work, and the impact of artificial intelligence in the lives of artists."
Vilá, through his company Jazz Vilá Projects, is known for developing minimalist montages on universal themes, performing at festivals worldwide, and regularly performing in the Dominican Republic and United States. Vilá is also founder of the Latin American Chamber Music Society and Azlo Productions. On screen, he stars in The Mick and the Trick and Netflix's Paquita Salas.
