Owners of Broadway's Lyric Theatre took the unusual step of announcing that the current tenant, Cirque du Soleil’s Paramour, will move to another theatre in mid-2017 while the Lyric undergoes unspecified renovations.

Ambassador Theatre Group CEO Mark Cornell, owner of the Lyric, where Paramour opened May 25, 2016, released a statement December 1 saying that that the 1996-vintage Lyric, one of Broadway‘s newest theatres, ”will close temporarily, beginning May 2017, to undergo renovations.”

Paramour will continue to perform at the Lyric until April 16, 2017, before relocating to another theatre, which was not named. Tickets are on sale through that date at Cirquedusoleil.com/paramour.

Cirque du Soleil Theatrical CEO Scott Zeiger told Playbill.com, “Our partners at ATG and owners of the Lyric Theatre elected to do renovations to the theatre. They approached Cirque du Soleil about accommodating their plans, and after a friendly negotiation and an arrangement that we could not refuse, the producers have chosen to finish the run at the Lyric Theatre in 19 weeks.”

As for the post-move fate of the musical, the release said Cirque du Soleil is “currently in discussions with several theater owners in New York and abroad who are interested in welcoming this unique production, including Stage Entertainment for a production in Germany in 2018.”

Cornell said, “We will be sad to part with Cirque du Soleil at the end of April 2017, by which time they will have completed a very successful year on Broadway. The fact that Cirque du Soleil chose to debut its first Broadway show—a great achievement—at The Lyric, was an honor for us at ATG.”

The announcement comes a day after Ambassador Theatre Group, which is also renovating the Hudson Theatre to restore it to theatrical use, announced that it hired two executives to expand the company’s North American operations.
