New York playwright Bill Rosenfield, now a long-time London resident, is to see his partly autobiographically inspired play 46 Beacon transfer to Trafalgar Studios 2, beginning performances April 5 prior to an official opening April 10 for a run through April 29. It previously received its London premiere at Islington's Hope Theatre in 2015.
Set in 1970s Boston, the play revolves around two men who spend a balmy July evening together after Robert invites Alan back to his theatrical hotel room for a night, hoping for a connection.
In a press statement, Rosenfield commented, “I couldn’t be happier that a semi-autobiographical account of a special night in my life is opening in the West End. Ultimately, the play came out of my need to express just how far and fast gay politics had progressed, in a touching but, I hope, also humorous way, and I am really excited to bring it to a wider London audience.”
His previous plays include True Fans (The Abbey, Orlando/Blank Theatre LA, Living Room Series), Sunshine and Shadow (Blank Theatre LA, Living Room Series), Let Me (Asolo Theatre, Sarasota Florida, Unplugged Series), and the award-winning one-act Bridal Terrorism (Samuel French). His adaptation of Frank Loesser’s The Most Happy Fella, directed and choreographed by Casey Nicholaw, was produced as part of the City Center Encores! series in New York City.
As well as writing plays, Rosenfield has also written the annual Drama Desk Awards ceremony in New York for the last six years. Prior to turning his attention to playwriting, he had a career in the recording industry in New York as the executive producer of over 65 original cast recordings, beginning with the original production of Stephen Sondheim’s Assassins and ending approximately 20 years later with the Broadway revival of Hair, garnering over 30 Grammy nominations in the process. Among the awards he has received are two Drama Desk Awards (1992 and 2002), an SDC Foundation Governor’s Award, and a Richard Rodgers Award (2006).
The play is directed by Alexander Lass and produced by Oli Sones and Ed Sinke. Full casting is still to be announced.
