Lost Shanghai, a new musical featuring a book, lyrics, and music by Grammy nominee Angel Lam, with book and lyric contributions by Richard Caliban, will receive a concert staging at Merkin Hall December 2.

Starring Austin Ku (Soft Power), Kai An Chee (Miss Saigon), Mandarin Wu (Pan Asian Rep), and Gen Parton-Shin (Japanese productions of Rent, Next to Normal, Rocky Horror Show), Lost Shanghai is a love story set during the pre-revolution period prior to the fall of Shanghai. Two unlikely lovers, a nightclub singer who has been forced into service by the secret police, and an innocent young man, grapple with their shared fate as the world around them descends into revolution.

Directed by Richard Caliban, the concert staging will also feature Gordon Lee on harmonica, Yang Yi on gu zheng, Graeme Steele Johnson on clarinet, Patrick Yim on violin, Ben Larsen on cello, Hyungjin Choi on piano, and Alex Wyatt on percussion.

Says Lam, “My growing up in the recently disturbed, protest-engulfed city of Hong Kong and my grandfather living through violent mid-20th century China, lead me to develop this theatrical work.”

The production team includes projection designer Andrew Freeburg and choreography consultant Mandarin Wu.
