Bad news, theatre fans. Apple is not moving forward with a third season of its theatre-centric streaming series Schmigadoon!, per a social media statement from show creator and head writer Cinco Paul. Adding insult to injury, Paul shares that a third season of the series has been written, including 25 original songs.

But it's not all necessarily gloom and doom. Paul leaves room for that already-written season to find a new streaming or broadcast home. "[T]he optimist in me is convinced it's not the end of Schmigadoon...and maybe it's even a happy beginning," writes Paul.

The series followed New Yorkers Josh and Melissa, who, in the first season, found themselves suddenly stuck in a fantastical Brigadoon-like town called Schmigadoon that's home to a number of characters oddly similar to figures from classic Golden Age musicals like BrigadoonOklahoma! The Music Manand Carousel, among others. The series' second season saw the duo returning to a musical theatre land, now re-christened Schmicago and populated with characters from 1970s Broadway, paying homage to such titles as CabaretChicagoHair, and Sweeney Todd.

Cecily Strong and Keegan-Michael Key starred as Melissa and Josh, respectively, and were joined by a host of Broadway and screen favorites taking on the other roles, including Ariana DeBose, Martin Short, Dove Cameron, Jaime Camil, Kristin Chenoweth, Alan Cumming, Ann Harada, Jane Krakowski, Aaron Tveit, Tituss Burgess, and Patrick Page.

Episodes all featured original songs (written by Paul) modeled on actual showtunes. "Corn Puddin'," written for the series' first season, won Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics at the 2022 Primetime Emmy Awards.
