Original Broadway Rent star Anthony Rapp is taking his solo musical show Without You Off-Broadway for a limited run at New World Stages. As previously reported, performances will begin January 14, with opening night set for January 25, the 27th anniversary of the first public performance of Rent. The run will continue through April 30.
In 1996, Rent was the first to offer in-person rush tickets, which made the hottest show in town affordable to everyone. Continuing that tradition, the producers of Without You will offer rush and lottery tickets for every public performance.
The Daily In-Person Rush will take place at the New World Stages box office with tickets available until 30 minutes to curtain, while supplies last. The Digital Lottery will begin at midnight, one day before the performance, and winners will be drawn the same day at 9 AM and 3 PM. One person may buy up to two tickets at $33 each for both the Digital Lottery and Daily In-Person Rush. Visit WithoutYouMusical.com.
Based on his best-selling memoir of the same name, Without You features music from Jonathan Larson's Rent along with original songs by Rapp, David Matos, and Joe Pisapia. The show picks up as Rapp, broke and working at Starbucks, gets an audition for a new rock opera, going on to tell the story of the early days of the landmark musical.
Steven Maler is at the helm with Daniel A. Weiss serving as music director, along with providing orchestrations and original compositions with additional arrangements by Tom Kitt. Led by Weiss, the band features Clérida Eltimé on cello, Paul Gil on bass, Jerry Marotta on drums, and Lee Moretti on guitar.
The creative team also includes lighting and scenic designer Eric Southern, costume designer Angela Vesco, sound designer Brian Ronan, and projection designer David Bengali.
Without You is produced by Lisa Dozier with Royal Family Productions, Cue to Cue Productions, Ryohei Otani/Motoko Kimura, Brian J. Heck/Harish Karthikeyan, Jason Turchin/Shimmy Braun, Charlotte Cohn, Abigail E. Disney, Kim Vasquez, and creative producer Chris Henry; LDK Productions is the general manager.
Without You played its world premiere at Pittsburgh's City Theatre in 2008. In the years since, the show has been seen in Boston, at the Edinburgh Fringe, in London, and more. The Off-Broadway bow follows earlier NYC engagements at Joe's Pub and Royal Family Performing Arts Space last year. An album of the show was released by PS Classics in 2012.
