The two began dating during the reading/workshop phase of the latest Broadway revival of On The Town, in which Umphress played the brassy cabbie Hildy. Umphress also boasts credits in Broadway’s Bring It On: The Musical, Priscilla Queen of the Desert, On A Clear Day You Can See Forever, and American Idiot.

“I had seen her photo on when American Idiot came out, and I just thought she was gorgeous. I was like, ‘When I get to New York and I meet this person, I’m going to be absolutely shameless and go after her,’” Williams told Playbill in 2014. “After I got cast in this On the Town reading, I went to Alysha’s good friend, Marla Mindelle, who was is in Cinderella, with me and I said, ‘Tell me about your friend, because I think she’s as cute as they come.’”

In addition to his appearances in Broadway’s Cinderella and On The Town, Williams made his debut as part of the ensemble in 2009’s Memphis.

The holidays seem a magical time for this duo—December 23, 2013 was their first date. Then, Williams booked a last-minute train to be by Umphress’ side on New Year’s Eve that year. “He showed up at the Kennedy Center at a quarter ’til midnight in a suit with a toothbrush and a wallet.”

By the looks of the above Instagram post, Williams returned Umphress to the Kennedy Center to pop the question.

Congratulations to the happy couple!
