On April 24, Disney Theatrical Productions President Thomas Schumacher announced that a Broadway revival of Beauty and the Beast—Disney's first property to be adapted for the Broadway stage—was in the works. The original cast starred Susan Egan and Terrence Mann in the title roles. The music was written by Alan Menken, lyrics by Howard Ashman and Tim Rice, and book by Linda Woolverton. Directed by Robert Jess Roth, the production earned nine Tony Award nominations in 1994, winning for Best Costume Design.
