Directors Jessi D. Hill, Sarah Rasmussen, Mia Rovegno and Nicole A. Watson stage the piece that has been developed over the past year-and-a-half. It is based on a quote by late La Mama founder Ellen Stewart, who said, "We play for the Gods and in return, they play for us."

We Play for the Gods officially opens June 11 for a run through June 23 at the Cherry Lane Theatre.

Joining Golden (Xanadu, Assassins) and Rolfsud (The Coast of Utopia) are Amber Gray, Alexandra Henrikson and Irene Sofia Lucio (Wit).

Here's how the play is billed: "The copier coughs. The air conditioner stutters. Your Post-It supply is running low. Don't dismiss the notion that you may be reckoning with forces divine. In the world premiere production of We Play for the Gods, four women go to work on a seemingly ordinary day only to find that a trickster god has slid through the cracks and cubicles of their office to take them on a journey to the other side of ordinary. Who knows? Today, the same could happen to you."

The contributing playwrights are Alexandra Collier, Charity Henson-Ballard, Andrea Kuchlewska, Kristen Palmer, Dominique Morisseau, Melisa Tien and Stefanie Zadravec.

The production has scenic design by Jennifer Moeller, costume design by Moria Sine Clinton, lighting by Scott Bolman and sound design by Stow Nelson.

The Cherry Lane Theatre is located at 38 Commerce Street. For tickets, phone (866) 811-4111, or visit WomensProject.

Founded in 1978 by Julia Miles, and now under the leadership of producing artistic director Julie Crosby, Women's Project provides a stage for women playwrights and directors.
