PBS' Great Performances will present the new documentary Birgit Nilsson: A League of Her Own March 22 as part of a month-long celebration of Women's History Month. The documentary, directed by Thomas Voigt and Wolfgang Wunderlich, delves into Nilsson's life in the arts and features rare television and archival footage of the legendary soprano's career, including interviews with Plácido Domingo, Marilyn Horne, Nina Stemme, and Jonas Kaufmann.
Born in Sweden in 1918, Nilsson rose to prominence within the opera world in the 1950s through the 1970s, known for her groundbreaking turns in Wagner's Tristan und Isolde, Tannhäuser, and the Ring Cycle; Strauss's Elektra and Die Frau Ohne Schatten; and Puccini's Turnadot.
