The recent revival of Jesus Christ Superstar, after rising again (so to speak) on video and DVD March 20 and on CD March 27, celebrates Easter Week with a PBS special April 11. A part of the Great Performances series, Superstar will air on New York City's WNET at 8PM EST. Glenn Carter stars as Jesus in this film edition, as he did on the West End and on Broadway. Joining him are Jerome Pradon (Judas), Renee Castle (Mary), "The Young Ones" and "Blackadder" star Rik Mayall (Herod) and several of the Broadway cast's members in smaller roles, including Tony Vincent as Simon Zealotes and Frederick B. Owens as Caiaphas. Vincent played Judas on Broadway.
Superstar, the musicalized story of Jesus Christ from Palm Sunday through the crucifixion, made its world premiere on Broadway at the Mark Hellinger Oct. 12, 1971. It ran there 720 performances. The original London production ran for eight years and 3,358 performances, the fifth- longest running West End show. A movie version was made in and starred Ted Neeley as Jesus. Songs from the score include the U.S. chart hit "I Don't Know How to Love Him" and "Superstar."
