Signature Theatre celebrated the official opening of Pulitzer Prize winner Stephen Adly Guirgis’ 2000 play Jesus Hopped the ‘A’ Train October 23. The prison drama returns to the Off-Broadway stage for the first time following its critically acclaimed debut 17 years ago.
Directed by Mark Brokaw, performances began October 5. The cast is made up of Sean Carvajal (who replaced Victor Rasuk during previews due to a personal issue), Edi Gathegi, Ricardo Chavira, Erick Betancourt, and Stephanie DiMaggio.
Set inside Rikers Island, Jesus Hopped the ‘A’ Train follows Angel Cruz, a 30-year-old bicycle messenger awaiting trial for the death of the leader of a religious cult. Inside prison, Angel is befriended by a charismatic serial killer named Lucius Jenkins, a born-again believer who will change the course of Angel’s life forever.
